About Us
The Invariant Society was founded in 1936 in Balliol College as a maths society. The society was named by J. H. C. Whitehead, a fellow at Balliol College, by picking a random book from his bookshelf. Over 89 years, we’ve now grown to have over 300 members.
As you might guess, our 90th anniversary is coming up soon! Keep an eye out ;)
Our Events
Our first talk was given by G. H. Hardy, and since then we’ve had such speakers as Benoit Mandelbrot and Sir Roger Penrose. We also run monthly puzzle events and other social gatherings (see our events page for more details!).
Our Initiatives
Since 1961, we’ve published The Invariant, a maths magazine. Last year, in collaboration with the London Stock Exchange and QRT, we launched QRT academy for students to get hands-on experience with finance. Earlier this year, we ran the inaugural Oxford Maths Team Challenge, an annual maths competition for sixth formers.
